As a tremendously talented pianist, singer and improviser, his abilities can make you forget what a uniquely remarkable composer Eli really is. He celebrates his influences wholeheartedly, while remaining unabashedly individual. The sincerity in his topics and the vehicles he chooses to express them, are a testament to this artist’s depth and sensitivity. Tomorrow night Eli will be performing sets of original material and arrangements at the Café’ Metropol (www.cafemetropol.com); with a group made up of his favorite musicians, dubbed, “The Drummer-less Quartet.” Miguel Atwood-Ferguson (www.myspace.com/miguelatwoodferguson) on violin and viola is someone who Eli affectionately describes, “we feel music the same way.” Years of playing together and sharing recordings has created a two way street of respect and admiration, melding their musical souls together. On performing together Eli says, “I’ve been told that it looks like we are vibrating on the same wavelength.” Laying it down on the upright bass will be Dan Lutz (www.myspace.com/triplelutz), who according to Eli, “has a real soulful happy groove about him, because there’s real joy in his playing.” The musicality and intuition that this individual brings to the table are awe-inspiring; a beautiful example of his playing is on the track “Sofia’s Lullaby” from Eli’s first record, posted below. Playing guitar will be Marcel Camargo (www.marcelcamargo.com) whose phrasing and articulation are always brilliantly uncovered in the big picture. Eli simply says, “every time I listen to him, those are the quadrants of the galaxy I want to set my course to.” The challenges of playing without a drummer afford this ensemble an opportunity to tap into a higher musical place, both on a rhythmic level as well as a harmonic one. Looking forward to the challenge Eli says, “even if I don’t play a single note, these three guys are so amazing; they’ll create a beautiful musical palette.”
