Born and raised in Los Angeles, Yonatan grew up listening to rock and roll and was playing guitar at the age of fourteen and bass guitar a year later. His early passion for Jazz led him to the upright bass and by college he began performing regularly in many clubs in Los Angeles including the House of Blues, Knitting Factory and Hotel Cafe. His desires to be a truly versatile and contemporary musician led him to play and record with groups that ranged thoughout most genres. In the winter of 2000 Yonatan produced and composed his first solo record, “POTS (Please Obey The Signs)” a mostly instrumental album which featured thrity of LA’s finest young musicians.
After graduating from USC, Yonatan decided to further his education by studying Sound at Ex’pression Center for New Media in Emeryville, CA. There he received his second degree, in Comprehensive Sound Arts, and became fully immersed in the world of music production. His time in the Bay Area was extremely productive, as he worked with artists whose musical styles and tastes ranged from Hip-Hop to Folk and Heavy Metal to Indian Classical Music. Some of his most memorable moments in the studio were with George Clinton and Merl Saunders, as well as on stage with the Black Eyed Peas, and the Crown City Rockers.
Returning to Los Angeles, Yonatan worked at one of Hollywood’s most historic studios, Radio Recorders. There he produced and engineered full time, and worked with countless artists including the legendary John Cale of the Velvet Underground and Lonnie Jordan of War.
With his real passion for the stage, he focused his energy into the band million / billion which developed a live show highly driven by Yonatan’s intensity and multitasking capabilities. The band toured the country and shared stages with notable acts such as Ray LaMontagne, Gomez, and Beck and released thier first full length abum entitled Ready. Fire. Aim. through Universal at the beginning of 2007. It was well received for both it’s songwriting and musicianship as well as the stellar co-production with Karl Derfler (No Doubt, Dave Mathews) .
At the end of March 2007 Yonatan was back in the studio, this time with singer songwriter Andrew Paul Woodworth and producer Evan Frankfort (Liz Phair, Biohazard). The results were synergetic, and by the release of the record in Germany April 2008 the reviews were extatic; while the live shows in Los Angeles, London and all over Germany, including shows opening for Deep Purple, have been met with even more enthusiasm.
Always the multitasker, Yonatan shares his time on the stage and in the studio. His compositions have been featured on tv shows such as King of Queens, Dr. Phil, and Rachel Ray. Most recently a scoring project with Nick Ngo (Fingerbangerz) has been featured for “America’s Best Dance Crew” the Jabbawockeez in the show’s second season debut.
Throughout it all, He has been most commited to improvisations and for the moments that really click. Frequently, under his own name Yonatan puts friends together for spontaneous performances in the same way a painter chooses colors that will help reveal the picture from within a canvas. While style and genre are never considerations, these performances evoke true expression in the face of unbredictability; and result in memorable and inspiring musical experiences for everyone in the room, especially Yonatan.
Currently he is in the studio diligently working on his second solo record, and having the best time ever!
